On May 29, 2025, on the sidelines of the High-Level International Conference on Glacier Protection, a side event titled “Unlocking Sustainable Financial Flows for Glacier Protection and Economic Resilience in Tajikistan” was held at the initiative of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Tajikistan and with the support of the World Bank Group. The event brought together international financial institutions, representatives of the private sector, and industry experts.
The event was opened by the First Deputy Minister of Finance of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Yusuf Khayrullo Majidi, who emphasized that attracting sustainable financing for glacier protection projects not only helps preserve this vital water source but also serves as an effective tool for enhancing economic resilience by managing the impacts of climate change.
The primary objective of the event was to draw the attention of the international community to the critical role of glaciers as a major source of water, to assess the risks of their rapid melting in the context of climate change, and to create favorable conditions for strengthening regional and international cooperation in the fields of environmental protection and sustainable economic development.
As part of the event, a “roadmap” for mobilizing private capital through the issuance of sovereign green bonds was presented. Panel discussions focused on the role of governments, regulatory bodies, and the private sector in strengthening economic resilience by financing measures for prevention, adaptation, and mitigation of climate change effects on glaciers.
International experts discussed the development of the public securities market in light of the planned issuance of green bonds in 2025, key factors in attracting investment to the private sector, expanding sustainable investment opportunities, and the targeted use of green financing to address environmental challenges. They also expressed their readiness to cooperate with Tajikistan in mobilizing sustainable financing.
