A meeting of the Group of Friends of Glaciers was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to discuss the implementation of UN General Assembly resolutions on glacier preservation and to strengthen international cooperation in this area.
CEP Chairman Bahodur Sheralizoda expressed its appreciation to the Member States of the Group for their continued support, partnership and active contribution to advancing the global glacier preservation agenda.
The meeting emphasized that the establishment of the Group of Friends of Glaciers at the United Nations, co-chaired by Tajikistan and Argentina, reflects growing international recognition of glacier preservation as a key issue for water security, sustainable development, disaster risk reduction and human well-being.
The important contribution of Member States to the successful organization of the First International High-Level Conference on Glacier Preservation, held in Dushanbe in May 2025, was also highlighted.
CEP Chairman noted that, under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Leader of the Nation H.E. Emomali Rahmon, Tajikistan has consistently promoted the global water and climate agenda.
In this context, the declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation, the proclamation of 2025–2034 as the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences, and the UNEA resolution on glacier preservation were recognized as important steps towards strengthening joint global action.
