Today, at the initiative of the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan, together with the OSCE Office in Dushanbe, a gathering was held to assess the progress of implementing the recommendations of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). The discussion, chaired by Mavsuma Muini, Deputy Chairman of the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan, and Tatiana Tsurkan, Acting Head of the OSCE Office in Dushanbe, saw participation from members of the Women's Union under the Majlisi Namoyandagon, representatives of the Executive Office of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Tajikistan, ministries and departments, non-governmental organizations, and civil society.
Mavsuma Muini noted that relying on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and the Convention "On the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women" (1979), the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, under the leadership of Emomali Rahmon, Founder of Peace and National Unity - Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, has adopted more than 60 normative legal acts to ensure the observance of women's constitutional rights, provide decent working and living conditions, and strengthen their status and position in society.
In connection with this, the responsibilities of parliamentarians as a bridge between the people and the government lie in creating a favorable environment for accelerating the implementation of beneficial measures to improve gender equality, empower women, and prevent domestic violence.
With the aim of eliminating gender stereotypes and ensuring an effective gender policy, the Republic of Tajikistan has ratified the main international human rights instruments, including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
On the basis of the Constitution dozens of normative legal acts were adopted that regulate relations to ensure constitutional guarantees of equality between men and women in the social, political, and cultural spheres, increasing the role of women in society, as well as the education, selection, and placement of leadership personnel from among talented women and girls.
The adoption of the Law of the Republic of Tajikistan "On the Prevention of Domestic Violence" and its subordinate acts has indeed laid an important legal and fundamental basis. Moreover, the National Development Strategy of the Republic of Tajikistan for the period until 2030 will contribute to the further development of gender legislation.
Furthermore, it was stated that currently, there are 10 women (31%) members in the Majlisi Milli of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan, and 18 women (29%) deputies in the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan. These numbers represent an increase of two and four members, respectively, compared to the previous convocation.
Women constitute 25 percent of civil servants, 73 percent of education sector workers, 71 percent of health sector workers, 47 percent of culture sector workers, 39 percent of the banking sector, 37 percent of scientists, 30 percent of entrepreneurs, and 25 percent of the communications sector in the country.
It was emphasized that to achieve a sustainable future amid expanding social contradictions, they work with regional and international partners to protect the rights and freedoms of women and girls, reproductive health rights, and empower women through effective legislation.
The gathering continued its work in separate sections. Participants made reports and exchanged views regarding the implementation of the recommendations of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), discussing both achievements and challenges encountered during implementation.
The presented proposals aim to further strengthen women's roles in society, eliminate all forms of rights violations against women, enhance women's self-awareness, and increase their professional and social activity through the adoption or improvement of national laws.
