Today, a ceremonial meeting was held at the National Library of the Republic of Tajikistan to mark the 30th anniversary of the country’s cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The event took place under the title: “Achievements and Challenges in Implementing the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and Prospects within the Framework of the New Medium-Term Development Program of the Republic of Tajikistan for 2026–2030.”
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Chairman of the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan, Muini Mavsuma, who delivered a welcoming speech. She emphasized that, since the first days of independence, Tajikistan, thanks to the wise and farsighted policy of the Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, esteemed Emomali Rahmon, has attached special importance to cooperation with the United Nations, regarding it as a reliable international partner.
Within the framework of Tajikistan’s “Open Doors” policy, the Majlisi Namoyandagon actively collaborates with UNFPA, regularly undertaking effective measures to implement the Sustainable Development Goals in the country.
Today’s meeting marked an important stage in strengthening partnership and joint efforts to implement the 30-year Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development. The main goal of the event was to unite the efforts of all parties for the successful implementation of initiatives in the fields of population and sustainable development.
Muini Mavsuma noted that the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development, which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, is a fundamental document in the history of human rights and plays a key role in achieving inclusive development, gender equality, women’s empowerment, poverty reduction, and the advancement of health, education, and environmental sectors.
She also stressed the important role of parliamentarians as a link between the people and the government, creating favorable conditions for accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals aimed at gender equality, women’s empowerment, and the prevention of domestic violence.
To ensure equal opportunities, reduce social and gender inequalities, and prevent all forms of violence against women and girls, the National Council on Population and Development was established. The Council brings together representatives of the parliament, government, and civil society to develop and implement relevant legislative acts.
The Council operates at national, regional, and local levels, effectively improving policies to ensure real gender equality based on current legislation and the National Development Strategy up to 2030.
According to forecasts, by 2030, the population of Tajikistan will reach 11.5 million people, the majority of whom will be young and economically active citizens. The country’s legislation guarantees everyone access to reproductive health services, promotes reproductive health awareness, and encourages a healthy lifestyle.
"We will continue to actively support the implementation of the UNFPA Programme of Action. It contributes to eliminating socio-economic inequalities, ensuring the health and rights of women and girls, including the right to sexual and reproductive health, as well as promoting gender equality and sustainable development. I am confident that our joint efforts will bring the desired results," — emphasized Muini Mavsuma.
At the conclusion of the ceremonial meeting, Muini Mavsuma was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the United Nations Population Fund for fruitful cooperation, active promotion of gender equality, and enhancing the role of women in society.
