Today in Dushanbe, the Coordinating Consultative Meeting of the Chairpersons of Defense and Security Committees and Commissions of the Parliaments of the Member States of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) took place. Nasrullo Mahmudzoda, Chairman of the Committee on Law and Order, Defense, and Security of the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan, actively participated and delivered a keynote speech.
In his remarks, Mr. Mahmudzoda emphasized that the meeting offers an excellent platform for open dialogue, exchange of best practices, and the development of coordinated measures to address critical defense and security challenges. The Republic of Tajikistan attaches utmost importance to deepening cooperation within the CSTO framework, viewing it as a vital mechanism for ensuring collective security.
Central Asia remains a pivotal transit hub, linking East with West and North with South, endowed with abundant mineral and water resources alongside a steadily growing labor force.
Mr. Mahmudzoda highlighted the increasing use of information warfare and attempts to destabilize internal situations, including the propagation of radical ideologies. These threats disproportionately affect the youth, who, due to their inexperience, become prime targets of destructive forces.
Additional factors fueling regional instability include climate change, accelerated glacier melting, and fresh water scarcity—issues with the potential to ignite new conflicts. The challenges posed by population growth and migration further complicate the socio-economic landscape, necessitating joint, coordinated solutions.
Tajikistan’s proactive leadership in international diplomacy concerning climate and water matters was particularly underscored. As the initiator of the United Nations declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation and the designation of March 21 as the World Day of Glaciers, Tajikistan has garnered widespread global support for these initiatives. These efforts embody a long-term strategy focused on environmental protection, sustainable water resource management, and climate change adaptation.
The meeting concluded with a consensus that countering modern security threats is achievable only through collective cooperation. The CSTO’s pivotal role in maintaining regional stability was reaffirmed.
Moreover, the coordination of activities across international platforms, including the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), BRICS, and the United Nations, was recognized as essential for addressing shared challenges.
