Implementation of Tajikistan’s Global Initiatives in the Field of Glacier and Cryosphere Protection
A Republican Scientific and Theoretical Conference dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the State Independence of the Republic of Tajikistan and the “International Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences, 2025-2034” was held at the National Library of the Executive Office of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan.
Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Rahmonzoda Loik, took part in the conference and delivered a speech.
In his address, Rahmonzoda Loik emphasized that on 13 August 2024, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted the resolution entitled “Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences, 2025–2034”, initiated by the Founder of Peace and National Unity – Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, His Excellency Emomali Rahmon.
The adoption of this resolution designates 2025–2034 as the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences, aimed at promoting international scientific cooperation through research and scientific monitoring, as well as supporting sustainable development efforts to address challenges related to glacier melt and the impacts of climate change on the cryosphere.
According to a United Nations report, as a result of the rapid melting of glaciers, up to one-third of the world’s glaciers could disappear by 2050.
In this regard, the resolution calls upon all United Nations Member States, at all levels, to strengthen efforts to raise awareness about the Decade and the importance of glaciers, snow and ice for the climate system and the hydrological cycle, as well as to promote the exchange of experiences and knowledge concerning their economic, social and environmental impacts.
At the same time, building upon the initiative of the “International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation - 2025”, previously adopted at the initiative of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, His Excellency Emomali Rahmon, the resolution contributes to supporting countries in addressing issues related to the accelerated melting of glaciers and its consequences. The Committee for Environmental Protection attaches great importance to initiatives related to the cryosphere in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and implementing the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018–2028”.
The Committee also highly values Tajikistan’s significant role in advancing the global water and climate agenda, including glacier preservation, and expresses its readiness to cooperate with United Nations Member States within the framework of implementing the “Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences, 2025-2034”.
