The 45th meeting of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Board of Governors began today in Dushanbe. Bakhodur Sheralizoda, Chairman of the Committee on Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, and Mafalda Duarte, Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund, participated and delivered speeches.
During the opening ceremony, the feasibility of holding this high-level event in Dushanbe was assessed as part of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan's efforts to protect the environment and mitigate climate change.
The GCF Board of Governors meeting is a prestigious international event that began in Dushanbe, bringing together representatives of the Fund's member states, international organizations, financial institutions, and climate experts.
The meeting will discuss important issues related to climate finance, the implementation of sustainable development projects, and strengthening international cooperation in combating climate change.
It should be noted that hosting the 45th session of the Green Climate Fund's Governing Council in Tajikistan is seen as a reflection of the international community's trust in Tajikistan's global initiatives in environmental protection and advancing the international climate agenda, as well as a favorable basis for expanding cooperation with development partners and attracting green investments.
It is worth recalling that Tajikistan is internationally recognized as a leading country in advancing water and climate issues, including glacier protection, and Tajikistan's initiatives are consistently supported by the international community.
The Green Climate Fund is the world's largest international fund, established by the United Nations to assist developing countries in combating climate change. It finances large-scale projects to transition to a low-carbon economy and adapt to global environmental change.
The Fund was established in 2010 under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement. Located in the Songdo business district of Incheon, Republic of Korea, the Fund is governed by a 24-member Board of Directors and supported by a secretariat. The Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund is Ms. Mafalda Duarte, a native of Portugal. The Green Climate Fund's portfolio comprises over $20 billion, covering more than 300 projects.
The Green Climate Fund focuses on financing projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including the transition to renewable energy, climate change adaptation, and support for countries affected by drought, floods, sea level rise, and melting glaciers.
