On May 7, 2024, the United Nations General Assembly, during its 78th session, officially proclaimed May 25 as International Football Day through the adoption of Resolution A/RES/78/281. This initiative represents recognition of the great importance of football as a people’s game and an effective means of strengthening peace, friendship, mutual understanding, and sustainable development worldwide.
The adoption of this resolution was the result of an international initiative put forward by the Republic of Tajikistan. In particular, on February 9, 2024, the Chairman of the National Assembly of the Supreme Assembly of the Republic of Tajikistan, Chairman of the city of Dushanbe, President of the Central Asian Football Association (CAFA), and President of the Football Federation of Tajikistan, respected Rustami Emomali, addressed the United Nations with a proposal to officially recognize the role of football at the global level and establish the International Football Day.
The main objective of proclaiming the International Football Day is to enhance the role of sports in uniting people, promoting a healthy lifestyle, encouraging youth participation in sports, strengthening friendship and mutual understanding among nations, and developing international cooperation.
In the future, this initiative may contribute to the development of sports infrastructure, the popularization of football among adolescents and young people, the enhancement of countries’ international prestige, and the strengthening of humanitarian values and peaceful coexistence.
