Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22 by people around the world as a sign of support for environmental protection. This holiday was declared international in 1990 and on this day various activities are held across the globe aimed at addressing environmental issues and promoting a more responsible attitude toward nature.
In our sunny country - Tajikistan - a variety of events dedicated to Earth Day are also organized. It has become a tradition to hold both theoretical and practical activities on this day, such as seminars, round tables, and environmental campaigns, including the cleaning of land contaminated with chemicals, the collection of plastic waste, and much more.
Among the key events held during the week in honor of this important environmental date in the cities and districts of the Sughd region, on the initiative of environmental protection authorities, were campaigns titled “Clean Area,” “Clean Roads,” and “Clean Shorelines.” As part of these actions, participants carried out cleaning of residential areas, streets and avenues, pedestrian paths and drainage channels, canals and streams, the banks of the Syr Darya River and other water sources, contributing to the preservation and improvement of the environment.
It is worth noting that more than 6,700 representatives of various agencies, organizations, institutions, as well as citizens and residents of urban and rural communities actively took part in these campaigns. In total, 74 cubic meters of waste were collected and transported to disposal sites.
During the events, participants were also reminded of the main purpose of this environmental date - to raise awareness about human responsibility for the environment, as well as the global threats and challenges facing our common home. These explanations were provided by staff of the structural divisions of the Main Department for Environmental Protection of the Sughd region.
