The Public Organization “Peshsaf,” with the support of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, has completed the cleanup of another site in the Dusti district, Namuna village, Khatlon region.
Previously, the area housed an agricultural machinery storage facility and burial sites for obsolete pesticides. Currently, a residential house has been built on the site and people are living there. To detect the presence of pesticides, Peshsaf staff excavated a large area and discovered a significant burial site. As a result of the cleanup, approximately 5.5 tons of pesticides and 537 tons of contaminated soil were transported to the Vakhsh hazardous waste storage landfill.
The area is now safe for residential use. The cleanup was carried out under the GEF/UNEP 9421 project, “Demonstration of Non-Thermal Treatment of DDT Waste in Central Asia (Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan),” with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
