Participation and Presentation of Scientists from the Sughd Experimental Station of Soil Science and Land Reclamation of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the Tajik Academy of Agricultural Sciences (TAAS) at the Seminar on "The Socio-Economic Consequences of Desertification in Tajikistan," Held in the Conference Hall of the Main Department for Environmental Protection of the Sughd Region
During the seminar, scientists from the field presented the following recommendations and proposals to the participants on preventing desertification and soil degradation:
Preventing desertification requires the implementation of a comprehensive set of scientific, technical, and organizational measures. In the conditions of the Sughd Region, the introduction of modern agricultural technologies and the rational management of natural resources can significantly reduce the rate of land degradation.
One of the key priorities is the use of water-saving irrigation technologies, including drip and sprinkler irrigation. These methods help reduce water consumption while maintaining the required level of soil moisture. At the same time, modernization of irrigation systems and prevention of water losses in canals are of great importance.
To maintain soil fertility, it is essential to practice crop rotation, apply organic fertilizers, compost, and green manure crops, and cultivate leguminous crops. These measures increase the organic matter content of the soil, improve its structure, and enhance the activity of beneficial soil microorganisms.
In areas at high risk of wind erosion, the establishment of protective forest shelterbelts, as well as the planting of trees and native shrubs, is of particular importance. These measures reduce wind speed and help prevent soil erosion.
The restoration of pastures is also one of the key measures in combating desertification. This requires organizing livestock grazing according to the carrying capacity of pastures and implementing rotational grazing practices. Such measures promote the recovery of natural vegetation and reduce soil erosion.
Under the conditions of climate change, the cultivation of crop varieties resistant to drought and soil salinity is of great importance. These varieties are capable of producing relatively high yields even under conditions of limited water availability.
Raising public environmental awareness, conducting seminars and practical training sessions, and involving scientists, specialists, and farmers in the implementation of modern technologies are among the main factors in preventing desertification.
