Methods for Reclaiming Saline Soils

One of the key factors in increasing soil fertility and improving crop productivity is maintaining the favorable reclamation (meliorative) condition of irrigated lands. Improving the meliorative condition of irrigated lands and preventing soil salinization are essential for the timely implementation of agronomic practices, the maintenance of an efficient irrigation regime, and the introduction of crop rotation. These measures provide the foundation for obtaining high agricultural yields and ensuring the efficient use of investments in the agricultural sector.

The control of both natural salinization of arable lands and secondary salinization caused by irrigation under various conditions is one of the most important challenges facing modern agriculture.

According to available data, the total area of saline and salt-affected lands worldwide is approximately 545 million hectares. Countries affected by soil salinity are located in diverse climatic zones, ranging from humid regions such as Canada to extremely arid areas such as Iran and Iraq. Saline soils are most widespread in arid and semi-arid regions. In the Republic of Tajikistan, the area of lands susceptible to salinization exceeds 100 thousand hectares.

Scientific studies have shown that one of the most effective solutions to this complex problem is the use of drainage systems, which serve as the primary means of regulating the soil water regime and preventing soil salinization.

Obtaining high yields on saline lands is impossible without implementing special reclamation measures, the most important of which are the leaching of saline soils and the proper operation of drainage systems.

Meliorative and hydrogeological studies have demonstrated that investigating the chemical composition and regime of groundwater under different environmental conditions makes it possible to identify the causes and conditions of soil salinization. This, in turn, enables the prediction of salinization processes under various natural conditions.

At the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry, practical recommendations for the leaching of saline soils under properly functioning drainage systems have been developed based on scientific achievements in agronomy, hydrogeology, soil science, and filtration theory. These recommendations have proven to be effective and are of considerable practical importance.

According to the degree of soil salinity, the Republic of Tajikistan belongs to the second group of countries in the world, with approximately 15% of its land being prone to salinization. As a result of soil salinity, the country annually loses more than 70–100 thousand tons of cotton, 75–100 thousand tons of grain, and significant quantities of other agricultural products. Agricultural products grown on saline soils are generally of lower quality and have limited market demand.
