The adoption of the special resolution by the United Nations General Assembly declaring 2027–2036 as the “International Decade of Strengthening Peace for Future Generations” represents another historic victory of preventive diplomacy and the peaceful foreign policy of the Republic of Tajikistan under the leadership of the Founder of Peace and National Unity — Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, respected Emomali Rahmon. In the context of today’s complex and unstable international relations, when the world is facing a wave of conflicts and new threats, this global initiative demonstrates that Tajikistan is recognized not only as an independent state but also as an active contributor to peace and stability at the global level.
On June 25, 2026, another golden page was written in the history of modern diplomacy of the Republic of Tajikistan and the system of international relations. The United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a special resolution entitled “International Decade of Strengthening Peace for Future Generations” (2027–2036), proposed by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Leader of the Nation, respected Emomali Rahmon. This historic event took place on the eve of Tajikistan’s sacred National Unity Day, symbolizing the country’s commitment to peace and the historic mission of the Tajik people on the international stage.
The support of this landmark document by 153 UN member states is clear evidence of the high respect and strong confidence of the international community in the outstanding personality of the Founder of Peace and National Unity — Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, respected Emomali Rahmon, as well as in the wise foreign policy of our country. Tajikistan, which experienced the tragedy of an imposed civil war in the early years of independence and achieved lasting peace and national reconciliation through the exceptional efforts of the Head of State, has today transformed its unique peacebuilding experience into a model of global significance. The “Tajik formula of peace” has become not only a national achievement but also the foundation of a new comprehensive initiative aimed at protecting humanity and future generations from the consequences of wars and conflicts.
In the first half of the third decade of the 21st century, the international community has faced deep political crises, regional armed conflicts, and growing geopolitical competition. According to official UN reports, the number of armed conflicts and security threats worldwide has reached critical levels, leading to reduced humanitarian funding and challenges to sustainable development. In such a complex and sensitive environment, where trust among global powers is declining, the international community has needed a new platform for constructive dialogue more than ever before.
It was precisely during this crucial period that the Leader of the Nation, respected Emomali Rahmon, speaking from the high tribune of the United Nations and recognizing his profound responsibility before history and the future of humanity, put forward the initiative to declare the “Decade of Strengthening Peace.” The political philosophy of this initiative lies in the understanding that peace should not be viewed merely as the absence of war or a temporary responsibility of the present generation. Peace is the foundation of human existence and a priceless legacy that must be strengthened and safely passed on to future generations.
The importance of this resolution lies in the fact that it gives new momentum to the goals and principles of the UN Charter, including commitments to the peaceful settlement of disputes and the protection of future generations from the horrors of war. Through this initiative, Tajikistan has demonstrated that even small states can play a key role in shaping global policy and ensuring the security of the planet by promoting major humanitarian ideas.
One of the distinctive features of the resolution “International Decade of Strengthening Peace for Future Generations” is that it places people and the continuous connection between generations at the center of attention. According to the provisions of the document, UN member states are committed to taking into account the needs, interests, and rights of children, youth, and future generations when making political and economic decisions.
This special focus on future generations will help ensure that in the coming decades the culture of violence gives way to a culture of peace, mutual understanding, and cooperation. The leadership of Tajikistan, relying on its domestic policy where youth are considered a driving force of society, has elevated this model to the international level.
The adoption of this resolution has further strengthened the position of the Republic of Tajikistan as an active and leading state within the global UN system. Today, the world recognizes Tajikistan not only for its major initiatives in the fields of water and climate, such as the “International Decade for Action ‘Water for Sustainable Development’” and the declaration of 2025 as the “International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation,” but also as a source of peacebuilding ideas.
Thus, Tajikistan, under the leadership of the Founder of Peace and National Unity — Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, respected Emomali Rahmon, is presenting a comprehensive and far-reaching program for the future of the planet. We have demonstrated that national experience in resolving border issues and achieving national reconciliation, which was also recognized in the resolution as a positive experience of Central Asia and Tajikistan, can serve as a source of inspiration and guidance for other countries.
The declaration of 2027–2036 as the International Decade of Strengthening Peace means that during the next decade the United Nations, international and regional organizations, scientific institutions, and civil society will coordinate their efforts around this important goal.
For our country, this represents a unique opportunity to become a center for major international peacebuilding events and forums, as well as to further strengthen its political standing at the highest level.
For the Tajik people, peace is not merely a word or a political concept, but a sacred value and a guarantee of a dignified life. The message of Tajikistan to the international community through this resolution is clear and firm: we must unite today, promote dialogue, and build a world where future generations will live not in fear of wars and conflicts, but in an atmosphere of peace, justice, and cooperation.
This great initiative will become the historic legacy of the present generation of the Tajik people for the bright future of all humanity.
