In order to strengthen cooperation in the forestry sector and to review the progress of joint project implementation, a meeting was held between the leadership of the Forestry Agency under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Turkey, including Ms. Erda Çeler, Climate Change, Programme and Monitoring Expert, Mr. Akram Yasiçi, Forestry Specialist, and Mr. Abdudjabbor Hakimov, FAO Coordinator in Tajikistan.
During the meeting, the implementation of the ongoing project “Improving Biodiversity and Sustainable Forest Management” was discussed, as well as the review of a new project titled “Development of a Concept Note for a Green Climate Fund (GCF) Project on Forest Establishment, Sustainable Forest Management and Forest Conservation to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the Republic of Tajikistan”, along with prospects for further cooperation.
It was emphasized that the Republic of Tajikistan is among the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, and that the forestry sector plays a crucial role in climate change adaptation, prevention of desertification, and conservation of biodiversity. In this context, the “Forestry Sector Development Program for 2022–2026”, approved by a resolution of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, was presented as the key strategic document for sector development.
The parties also expressed their readiness to expand cooperation in the areas of forest establishment and restoration, development of industrial plantations, nursery and seed production, strengthening the material and technical base of forestry enterprises, human capacity development, application of science and innovation, as well as the establishment of small enterprises for processing forest products.
