On May 5, 2025, the Agency on Statistics under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan held a meeting of the Interagency Coordination to discuss the development of official statistics in the process of climate change adaptation in the Republic of Tajikistan.
The meeting was attended by the First Deputy Director of the Agency on Statistics, Aso Nurullo Asvat, relevant departments of the Agency, representatives of ministries and agencies, as well as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Opening the meeting, the First Deputy Director of the Agency, Aso Nurullo, emphasized that the state statistical bodies consistently support the initiatives and constructive steps of the Founder of Peace and National Unity — the Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, esteemed Emomali Rahmon, and continuously follow his directives and instructions in their work.
Special attention was paid to the implementation of the Government Resolution of the Republic of Tajikistan dated October 2, 2019, No. 482 “On the National Strategy for Climate Change Adaptation in the Republic of Tajikistan until 2030.” In this regard, the Agency on Statistics is taking practical steps and within its authority is making efforts to develop official statistics related to climate change.
It was noted that climate change is closely linked to the global political situation and requires special attention from the international community. In Tajikistan, the process of adaptation to climate change represents a complex set of measures aimed at reducing vulnerability and increasing resilience to climate variations.
“In this context, the Agency on Statistics is ready for mutually beneficial cooperation with ministries and agencies to strengthen data collection and processing, enhance the knowledge and intellectual capacity of staff, and create a sustainable ICT infrastructure for the storage and analysis of statistical information,” stated Aso Nurullo.
During the meeting, Mansura Bakhtdavlatova, Head of the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) project at UNDP Tajikistan, presented a report on the project’s activities and achievements. Firdavs Asmatbekzoda, Head of the Department of Industrial Statistics and Construction Investments at the Agency on Statistics, gave a presentation on preparing official statistics to support decision-making in the field of climate change, as well as planning data collection and dissemination. Khurshed Kasimov, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Protection at the Agency, shared information on the development of indicators for assessing national capacity and coverage of current indicators, along with further steps toward implementing the statistical system.
The meeting discussed the identification of priority directions for statistical indicators to be included in the monitoring system, approaches to using official statistics for climate change-related decision-making, identification of existing data gaps and potential information sources, methods of coordination among stakeholders, synchronization of key elements of the climate change adaptation monitoring and evaluation system, proposals for integrating climate indicators into official statistics, and the compilation of a preliminary list of necessary data and information sources.
At the conclusion of the meeting, participants’ opinions were heard and the presented issues were discussed.
